The Artist
Jill Hiura is the artist behind J.Hiura Ceramics. She creates her contemporary work on the Garden Isle of Kaua'i.
Born in San Francisco, California, Jill has been an artist for as far back as she can remember. Her grandmother was a ceramicist who introduced her to the wonders of clay at three years old. Jill’s passion for art led her to pursue many artistic mediums throughout her youth, including drawing, stained glass, and photography.
She continued her studies at the University of California, San Diego, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts.
Ceramics has remained the medium Jill has always gravitated back towards. She has been continually drawn to clay’s grounding nature as well as its unlimited potential of expression.
Jill explored this theme further as a member of the Potters Guild on Oahu.
After relocating to Kaua‘i, Jill was introduced to colored clay techniques through mentorship with Dean McRaine, an experience that expanded her understanding of the medium.
She later developed her own distinct approach to colored porcelain, shaped by her background, curiosity, and the slow, intentional rhythms of island life.
Jill envisions a world where art is celebrated in everyday objects that embody peace and joy. She feels called to push the boundaries of colored porcelain in function and design, and produce a body of work where craft meets fine art.
When she’s not in the studio, Jill spends her time gardening with her dog, Theo, and enjoying the beauty of the natural world that Kaua’i generously offers her.
